Power to the People

Riots across the London in August saw a tiny minority of people trying to destroy their communities. The far larger and much less publicised majority came together after the event to fix up and repair their communities.

It is important that this community engagement, sense of togetherness and positive determination is nurtured and supported. ‘Create a Council’ is a campaign, encorporating the old rallying cry, ‘Power to the People’, that will empower Londoners through the creation of a network of new local councils. The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) believes that if local people are elected by their community to influence and make decisions that will affect their own area, it will have significant impact on improving lives throughout the capital. The threshold of a new era for parishes

Very local councils are standing on the threshold of a new and exciting era according to a series of Parliamentarians and local government councillors. This was the unanimous message coming out of a fringe event hosted by the National Association of Local Councils last night at the Liberal Democrat Party Conference in Birmingham, which also saw calls for a share of business rates for local (parish and town) councils.

New Government funding for NALC and CPRE to provide help on local and neighbourhood planning

Communities and Local Government has chosen a partnership of NALC and CPRE to take forward one of four national projects under their Supporting Communities and Neighbourhoods in planning project. The joint programme will run for 12 months and provides funding for providing basic information about the planning system via a national website, a phone line and targeted publications as well as a programme of local events to help inform communities and local councils about how to influence local plans.
