Braunstone Town Council, the National Association of Local Councils (NALC) Star Council Awards 2023 Council of the Year winner, has been selected to speak at this year's Local Government Association (LGA) Annual Conference.

As part of the Innovation Zone at the conference, the Leicestershire and Rutland-based council will highlight how it has collaborated with Leicester City Council, Blaby District Council, Leicestershire County Council, and Sustrans on a £1.2 million plan to create safer and more attractive walking and cycling routes between New Lubbersthorpe and Leicester city centre. It includes widening existing footpaths to safely accommodate pedestrians and cyclists, creating new paths, connections, and routes to improve accessibility and cut journey times, narrowing distances between road crossings to create safer crossings, enhancing CCTV and lighting to create a more attractive and safer environment, and improving signage.

Braunstone Town Council was successful after a highly competitive process. NALC worked with the council to develop its application.

The Innovation Zone is a vibrant, creative space and programme within the LGA's Annual Conference. It enables councils to showcase new ideas and solutions to some of local government's biggest challenges. This year's LGA Conference will be held between 2 and 4 July 2024 in Harrogate.
