Media Watch is a weekly round-up of the latest major stories on the local (parish and town) council sector

  1. NALC and the parish sector have stepped up their campaign on getting an exemption on business rates for local council owned and maintained public toilets. This has been further pushed via a submission from Cranleigh Parish Council, Surrey, to the Government via the Sustainable Communities Act. Read here for more information. Another story on this available here (07.25, time limited availability).

  2. Lord Lytton, former President of NALC, supports the campaign for parishes and communities to be at the heart of the Cities and Local Government Bill, via speech in the House of Lords. See his speech here (7:05.05, time limited availability). A further media story here.

  3. As we look back over five years of a coalition Government and ask ourselves what it has done for planning, CPRE, NALC and Civic Voice demonstrate why a community right of appeal should be on the new Government’s agenda – and soon. Read more here.
