NALC welcomes MHCLG precept revision
The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) is pleased to see revised precept figures from the Ministry of Housing Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) which show that the average Band D precept increase in 2019/20 was actually 4.9% and not 5.7% as published in March.
The revised increase works out at just 6p per week or less than 1p per day and means that the average increase in our small share of council tax remained the same as last year. This clearly shows that England’s 10,000 local (parish and town) councils have continued to invest in communities while demonstrating the “restraint” expected by ministers.
Other headlines from the revised precept figures for 2019/20 include:
- The total precept raised by all local councils now stands at £553,383,884, an increase of £36,297,059
- Fifty-one local councils now precept at least £1 million, up from forty-four in 2018/19
- The twenty local councils with the highest precepts collectively raise £39,918,323
- Eight new local councils have been created in previously unparished areas, including Weymouth Town Council in Dorset, which has set a precept for its first year of £3,370,661
