The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) welcomes the recent publication of Sir Tony Redmond’s report into the oversight of audit and local government financial transparency.

NALC is pleased that its representations have been picked up in the report which recommends the continuation of current arrangements to procure audit, and consideration of the fairness of current external audit work levels. Sir Tony also proposes an examination of the current arrangements for increasing audit activities and fees if a body’s turnover exceeds £6.5m. Managing local council resource implications for persistent complaints was also responded to in the report.

These were all points that NALC made in its submission in 2019 to the Redmond Review, which are being addressed positively by the review team and which will hopefully create a more effective and transparent audit process for local councils. NALC is continuing to engage with the review team and other stakeholders, as well as the government.
