NALC sets up a new national network for LGBT+ councillors 

To coincide with Pride Month taking place throughout June, the National Association of Local Councils (NALC) is setting up a new national network for LGBT+ local (parish and town) councillors.

NALC’s #MakeAChange campaign aims to increase diversity in local councils to ensure they are as representative as possible by encouraging people from all backgrounds and experiences to become councillors.

The new network for LGBT+ councillors is being set up to connect councillors from across the country, provide a forum for learning and mutual support, and share experiences and good practice.

In 2018, NALC through its Diversity Commission conducted the first-ever census of councillors, which showed 3% of councillors identified as being LGBT+.

This latest network is part of a series of new NALC national networks which aim to help local councils and councillors connect, learn and share. In May 2021, the first meeting of the National Network: Coastal Communities was held and recently both the National Network: Young Councillors and National Network: Women Councillors were announced with their first meetings to be held in July.
