NALC celebrates International Women's Day

WOMEN

Today, the National Association of Local Councils (NALC) celebrates International Women's Day, a global day celebrating women's social, economic, cultural, and political achievements. NALC commends the fantastic work women from across England in the local (parish and town) council sector are doing and the positive impact on communities.

This year's theme, Break the Bias, reminds us of the deliberate and unconscious biases women still face, making it difficult to move ahead. It encourages action on behalf of organisations and individuals to level the playing field. NALC has created a video to celebrate all of the brilliant women working in the local council sector and helping to Break the Bias.

NALC's recent local elections report showed that only 38% of councillors are women. NALC's Make A Change campaign aims to get even more women and people from all backgrounds and experiences to become councillors.

Cllr Sue Baxter, NALC vice-president, said: "I applaud the fantastic work women across the sector are doing and strongly encourage anyone who feels they can make a change in their community to stand as a local councillor".
