NALC and SLCC forge a way forward

The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) and Society of Local Council Clerks (SLCC) held their first meeting on 20 March 2015 following the agreement of a new protocol between the two key national bodies representing local council staff and councillors.

In discussion, there was agreement that this was a period of huge opportunity for the sector, which would only be seized if there was close working between the two national bodies, councils, staff and councillors. The sector needed to work together now even more than ever before because of the challenges of localism, austerity and devolution.

The meeting covered a wide range of topics and agreed to issue a joint statement after the election promoting the work of NALC and SLCC outlining their respective roles and responsibilities and to encourage greater membership of both bodies.

Work together on an "employment work stream" covering a number of key issues including a new employers guide, template contract and policies, pensions and good employment practice.

Also both bodies agreed to hold a joint conference in the Autumn to build relationships between county associations of local councils and the Society's county branches.

Cllr Ken Browse, chair of NALC, said "This was a really good first meeting between us setting out an agenda of joint activity for the coming year to promote the sector's capacity, influence and reputation."

Andrew Tubb, vice-chariman of SLCC agreed and said: "Effective working relationships between councillors and staff at all levels is absolutely central to providing good services to local residents."
