NALC and SLCC meet to discuss shared priorities and commit to continued collaboration

We met with our partners, the Society of Local Council Clerks (SLCC), on 21 October 2026 to discuss shared priorities, reaffirming our commitment to working together to support parish and town councils.

Our chair Cllr Iain Hamilton and our chief executive Jonathan Owen met with SLCC chair Adam Keppel-Green and chief executive Rob Smith to review progress on several areas of joint working and considered opportunities to strengthen collaboration between the two organisations over the coming year.

There was agreement to continue our successful joint presence at the Local Government Association Annual Conference and to refresh the memorandum of understanding, recognising the value of a strong and constructive partnership in advancing the interests of the parish and town council sector.

We also reaffirmed our commitment to working together on civility and respect. We discussed continued joint engagement on standards in public life, including our responses to the recent Ethics and Integrity Commission call for evidence and engagement with the Public Office and Accountability Bill. The meeting further considered progress on the revised job evaluation scheme, with both organisations agreeing that further work is needed to address practical considerations around implementation and resourcing.

The meeting concluded with reflections on the recent SLCC National Conference. We thanked SLCC for the opportunity to address attendees at its conference, where Cllr Iain Hamilton described clerks as connectors, communicators and catalysts. Both organisations welcomed the positive reception to his speech. We also looked ahead to further opportunities for collaboration, including SLCC's attendance at our Annual Conference 2027.
