NALC explores award-winning innovation at Braunstone Town Council
This week, on 20 and 21 May, we visited Braunstone Town Council for our 2025 study tour. The two-day visit offered a unique opportunity for parish and town councillors and clerks from across the country to see firsthand the initiatives and community-focused work that led Braunstone Town Council to be named our Star Council Awards Council of the Year in 2023.
Hosted in Leicestershire, the study tour showcased several key community assets managed by the council, including the Thorpe Astley Community Centre, Braunstone Civic Centre, and Shakespeare's Park Sports Pavilion. Attendees explored how these facilities support various local services and activities.
Attendees also joined guided walking tours of local parks, where they examined the town's newly developed cycle and pedestrian route. This innovative infrastructure connects Braunstone Town to Thorpe Astley, improving sustainable transport links for residents and supporting the council's broader commitment to environmental responsibility.
Throughout the visit, the council's climate change strategies were explored, including its approach to reducing emissions and enhancing green spaces. Attendees also discussed Braunstone's ambitious sustainability plans and how the council empowers local people to contribute to shaping their community.
The study tour offered a valuable platform for sharing best practices, sparking ideas, and building connections across the local council sector. By seeing innovation in action, from sustainable transport initiatives to climate resilience planning, attendees left inspired with practical insights they can take back to their communities. Study tours like this are a core part of our commitment to supporting learning and leadership in local government.
