NALC study tour offers an exclusive insight into award-winning Oswestry Town Council
We have launched a two-day study tour giving parish and town councils the opportunity to learn from Oswestry Town Council's approach to partnership working, innovation and local leadership. Taking place between 18 and 19 May 2027, the tour will offer practical insights into how the council is delivering positive outcomes for its community, with bookings now open.
Oswestry Town Council, our Star Council Awards 2025/26 Council of the Year award winner, will open its doors to attendees for a behind-the-scenes look at the projects, partnerships and principles that have helped it deliver exceptional outcomes for its community.
Centred on the theme Building a Better Community Together, the study tour will give attendees the opportunity to meet the councillors, officers and partners behind the council's success, explore key sites across the town and learn how an ambitious, partnership-led approach can deliver lasting benefits for local people.
The programme will showcase Oswestry's work on regeneration, community services, place-making, asset management and financial sustainability, with practical lessons that other parish and town councils can take back to their own communities.
Highlights include exploring the impact of the High Street Heritage Action Zone and Empty Property Grant Scheme, hearing from local businesses that have benefited from the scheme, and visiting The Centre, a youth-focused community hub supporting young people through partnership working.
Attendees will also discover how the council manages its green spaces at award-winning Cae Glas Park, supports the local economy through its markets, and is leading the ambitious restoration of Llwyd Mansion, the town's only Grade I listed building. The tour will also include the historic Old School House and a look at the council's wider infrastructure, including its toilets, car parks and depot.
Alongside these visits, attendees will hear how Oswestry Town Council works with organisations including the TNS Foundation, Oswestry BID and Oswestry Borderland Tourism to strengthen community services, support local businesses and shape the town's future. Discussions will also explore how the council finances its activities and uses its resources to deliver services, support regeneration and invest in the community.
Located in north-west Shropshire, Oswestry combines a rich heritage with independent businesses, award-winning markets, green spaces and a vibrant programme of festivals and community events. The study tour offers a valuable opportunity to understand how the council brings these assets together through effective leadership, a clear vision and strong local partnerships.
Places are strictly limited to 19 to ensure a focused, interactive experience. Tickets cost £280 plus VAT and include the study tour, an overnight stay and an evening meal. Early booking is recommended to avoid disappointment.
The study tour is sponsored by Clear Councils Insurance, CCLA and Unity Trust Bank.
