NALC unveils new councillor stories to highlight parish and town councillor leadership

We have unveiled three new councillor stories as part of our becoming a councillor campaign, shining a spotlight on the dedication, creativity and leadership that parish and town councillors bring to communities across England.

Becoming a councillor is one of the most direct and rewarding ways to serve a local community. From protecting green spaces and judging allotments to leading community events and strengthening digital engagement, parish and town councillors play a vital role in shaping vibrant, resilient places. The latest videos feature inspiring local leaders from across the country.

Cllr James Hodgkinson, Upper Hardres Parish Council in Kent, became Kent's youngest parish councillor. With a keen interest in public policy and technology, he has strengthened the council's digital presence by developing a social media campaign that enables residents to connect more easily with the council and stay informed about parish activities.

Cllr Alex Rowe, deputy chair of Gittisham Parish Council in Devon, is widely recognised in the village for his approachable manner and practical, can-do approach. Drawing on strong relationships across the community, he successfully revived the village fete following the COVID-19 pandemic and has overseen its continued success for the past three years, bringing residents together and strengthening community spirit.

Cllr Dianne Taylor, Wythall Parish Council in Worcestershire, has been a driving force behind a range of wellbeing initiatives. From establishing a memory and friendship café to supporting a thriving community garden, she demonstrates how councils can lead meaningful, grassroots responses to local needs while maintaining regular, open communication with residents.

Together, these councillors reflect the diversity of modern local leadership, from revitalising long-standing traditions to championing community wellbeing and harnessing digital tools to widen participation.

Our becoming a councillor campaign encourages more people from all backgrounds and experiences to consider standing for election and making a tangible difference where they live. The new videos provide an authentic insight into the role, showcasing the commitment, energy and local pride that define parish and town councils.
