Women councillors network meet to discuss bullying and harassment

The meeting delved into the ongoing survey by NALC for the women councillors network. The survey is designed to gain valuable knowledge about women's experiences within the local council sector. The objective is to understand how the network envisions shaping the delivery of the network. Complete the survey.

Cllr Kay Wesley (Congleton Town Council) chaired the agenda item on the pervasive issue of bullying and harassment in councils. Jackie Weaver from the Cheshire Association of Local Councils shared insights, tips, and advice. The key points discussed were training, role-specific guidance, and the importance of the Civility and Respect Pledge.

The open forum segment served as an interactive session for questions and answers with Jackie Weaver. Topics ranged from conflicts with the chairs of small councils to the need for more infrastructure in addressing issues. Recommendations included collaborating with neighbouring councils, early intervention in tackling problems, and the necessity of establishing and maintaining appropriate policies.

Cllr Kay Wesley proposed exploring avenues to lobby MPs for improved standards in local councils, suggesting a detailed discussion in a future meeting.
