NALC supports strike suspension

National Association of Local Councils (NALC) supports the actions of Unite, Unison and GMB unions to suspend strike action planned for this week.

NALC believe this would be the wrong time for the unions to take strike action when proposals being put forward by the local government employers is being consulted on by Unite, Unison and GMB unions with their respective members.

Under the proposals, made by the Local Government Association (LGA) on behalf of employers, councils will be consulted on proposals to increase pay by 2.2% for the majority of workers.

Cllr Ken Browse, chairman of NALC: “Yes we believe that the unions have made the right decision in calling off the strike planned for this week."

“It is good news for millions of people who either rely on local government services or work in this sector that the unions have decided to suspend strike action and consult on the latest pay deal offer from the local government employers’ side. It will mean that this week will see no disruption in essential services provided to communities and people."

The local government employers proposal is for a 2.2% pay rise for all staff earning £14,880 and above, with higher percentage increases for those earning less than this. The deal would run from 1 January 2015 to 31 March 2016.
