Corporate Peer Challenge highlights St Ives Town Council's ambition and strong leadership
A new report has praised St Ives Town Council's ambition, leadership and partnership working following a Corporate Peer Challenge delivered earlier this year.
We delivered the challenge alongside the Local Government Association, which brought together experienced councillors and representatives from across local government. Over three days, the peer team reviewed the council's leadership, governance, financial planning, local priorities and capacity for improvement.
The report describes the council's recent journey as one of development, growth and change, driven by a strong sense of purpose and a commitment to serving residents, businesses and visitors.
It highlights the council's success in securing assets for community benefit, developing a major capital programme and building strong partnerships. The report also recognises clear political and managerial leadership, positive relationships between councillors and council staff, and the pride, energy and enthusiasm demonstrated by staff.
St Ives Town Council was commended for its ambitious and innovative approach to devolution. This includes taking responsibility for 46 assets from Cornwall Council, safeguarding important community, cultural and heritage facilities and developing new opportunities to generate income. Partners described the council as a trusted and credible council with which they work well.
The report makes several recommendations to help St Ives Town Council build on these achievements and manage its next phase of development. These include reviewing organisational capacity, developing income and asset management strategies, strengthening performance management and modernising decision-making arrangements.
The findings demonstrate the value of Corporate Peer Challenges as a constructive, sector-led improvement tool. They give parish and town councils an independent assessment of their strengths, practical recommendations for future development and an opportunity to learn from experienced peers who understand the realities of local government.
We are proud to have supported the challenge through our partnership with the LGA. St Ives Town Council's willingness to open itself to external challenge reflects its commitment to continuous improvement. It provides a positive example for other parish and town councils seeking to strengthen their governance, resilience and delivery for their communities.
