NALC announces free event to equip councils for effective flood response and planning

We have announced a new free event, focusing on how parish and town councils can take practical action to strengthen flood resilience in their communities.

Taking place on 10 March 2027, the event will bring together insight, evidence, and real-world experience to help councils better prepare for and respond to flooding.

The event builds on our 2025 survey with Action for Communities in Rural England, which highlighted a clear need for parish and town councils to have access to practical tools and support. Since then, a year-long project funded by the Environment Agency has been gathering case studies from across the country, creating a stronger evidence base for community-led approaches to flood resilience.

As flooding continues to impact communities across England, the event will explore what effective local action looks like in practice and how councils can play a more active role in reducing risk and supporting recovery.

Attendees will hear directly from parish and town councils that are already tackling flooding in their areas, alongside practical guidance on engaging communities, strengthening local partnerships, and connecting with Local Resilience Forums. The event will also examine the role of community-led planning in addressing wider environmental challenges.

Designed to be both practical and insight-led, the event will equip parish and town councils with the knowledge, confidence, and connections needed to take proactive steps before the next flood event.
