NALC joins national call to support Remembrance events

We are joining forces with the Local Government Association (LGA) and the Royal British Legion (RBL) to encourage councils across England to support the delivery of Remembrance parades and services in their communities this autumn.

In our joint letter, the three organisations thank councils for their continuing commitment to Remembrance and recognise the important role they play in helping communities come together to honour those who have served in the Armed Forces.

This year's letter highlights the practical support all tiers of councils can provide to help ensure Remembrance events can take place, particularly at a time when budgets are under pressure. It notes that measures such as waiving road closure fees, providing street signage and coordinating parade routes can make a significant difference to local commemorations.

The letter also highlights the valuable contribution made by Royal British Legion branches and volunteers in supporting local Remembrance events. While increasing complexity around health and safety and road traffic legislation means some responsibilities, such as traffic management arrangements and Temporary Traffic Management Orders, need to remain with councils and other appropriate organisations, local RBL branches continue to play an important role. They can support event planning, provide Standard Bearers, and help identify local veterans, helping communities deliver meaningful and well-supported acts of Remembrance.

Coming after several significant military anniversaries, including 30 years since the end of operations in Bosnia, 15 years since the end of Operation Telic in Iraq and 110 years since the Battle of the Somme, the letter underlines the enduring importance of Remembrance in communities across the country.
