NALC marks White Ribbon Day and commits to 16 Days of Activism
Each year on White Ribbon Day (25 November), people around the world unite to stand against violence towards women and girls. White Ribbon UK leads this movement in England and Wales, engaging men and boys to take responsibility and speak out. Their mission is clear: stop violence before it starts.
The White Ribbon campaign focuses on prevention, challenging harmful attitudes and behaviours that can lead to abuse. This year's theme, We Speak Up, calls on men everywhere to use their voices to create a safer, more respectful world. Speaking up against sexism and inequality is a vital step in preventing violence.
In 2023, we became the first national body in local government to achieve White Ribbon accreditation, demonstrating our commitment to tackling gender-based violence. We have joined hundreds of organisations nationwide under the global symbol for ending violence against women and girls - the White Ribbon. Since achieving accreditation, we have implemented a three-year action plan, overseen by our White Ribbon Steering Group, which includes representation from councillors, clerks, and county associations.
But our work doesn't stop on 25 November. This month, we will attend the White Ribbon Parliamentary Reception, go on training courses, and actively participate in the 16 Days of Activism, sharing resources and encouraging parish and town councils nationwide to get involved. On our website, you'll find a comprehensive White Ribbon Toolkit designed to help councils take action as well as a dedicated webpage on violence against women and girls. Since achieving accreditation, we've encouraged parish and town councils across the country to join the movement, with many already signing up and making lasting progress in their communities.
Ending violence against women and girls starts with all of us. Together, we can build communities rooted in respect and equality.
