NALC, SAAA and SLCC chairs discuss governance and audit priorities

We met with the Smaller Authorities' Audit Appointments (SAAA) and Society of Local Council Clerks to discuss key developments and our priorities across the sector.

Following the publication of the SAAA Annual Report 2025/26, we discussed the continued growth of the sector and the importance of strengthening governance, accountability and compliance.

We also discussed the establishment of the Local Audit Office, future auditor appointments and audit fees, alongside updates on the digital Annual Governance and Accountability Return (AGAR) programme and the review of proper practices.

Recognising the importance of supporting parish and town councils to meet their governance and accountability responsibilities, we agreed on our intention to work together to develop resources and support to help councils strengthen governance and improve compliance.

We will meet again in six months to continue our discussions and collaboration on issues affecting the sector.
