NALC study tour goes behind the scenes at Taunton Town Council

We are pleased to launch bookings for an exclusive study tour offering an in-depth look at the first 1,000 days of Taunton Town Council.

This unique learning opportunity will provide parish and town councils with practical insight into how a newly formed town council has moved swiftly from creation to operation. The study tour will explore how Taunton Town Council has set priorities, built organisational capacity, established effective governance arrangements and delivered a wide range of services for its community in a short period of time.

The programme combines strategic discussion with on-the-ground learning. Attendees will hear directly from those involved in establishing the council, gaining first-hand insight into the challenges faced, key decisions taken and lessons learned along the way. The tour will showcase how Taunton Town Council has built a resilient and responsive organisation while maintaining a strong focus on community engagement and service delivery.

Tour highlights include a guided visit to Taunton town centre, featuring council-funded assets such as the Brewhouse Theatre, the Museum of Somerset, the transport hub and public conveniences, alongside walks through Goodlands Gardens and French Weir Park. Attendees will also hear how the council manages its parks and open spaces, including its three Green Flag parks at Comeytrowe, French Weir and Victoria Park.

The study tour will explore the council's key strategies and initiatives, including its Arts and Culture Strategy, Climate and Ecological Emergency Plan, approaches to tackling anti-social behaviour, CCTV and street marshal schemes, and engagement with hard-to-reach groups. Participants will also learn how the council identifies community needs and works with young people, including through the Citizens UK Safety Measures Project.

Partnership working will be a central theme, examining the delivery of the Taunton Together Festival and the council's achievement of town of sanctuary status, reflecting its commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive community.

Attendees will also gain insight into workforce development, learning how the council has built a dedicated team guided by a clear personnel strategy and innovative recruitment routes, including apprenticeship fairs, work experience and T Levels. A visit to the council's recently refurbished depot will demonstrate how investment in facilities has supported operational teams and service delivery.

The study tour also offers time to explore Somerset's county town. Taunton has a long and distinctive history, from its origins as an Anglo-Saxon burh to becoming a borough with special privileges by the time of the Domesday Book. Today, it is home to 64,621 residents (2011 census). It combines historic character with a vibrant cultural and civic offer, including the Brewhouse Theatre, the County Cricket Ground, Somerset County Museum, Taunton Castle and a thriving independent quarter.

Places are strictly limited to 22 to ensure a focused and interactive experience. Tickets cost £275 plus VAT and include the study tour, an overnight stay and an evening meal. Early booking is recommended to avoid disappointment.
