NALC backed Sheerness campaign to get new local council

The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) is delighted at last nights news that Sheerness will get a new local (parish and town) council.

After a 90-minute debate, the proposal was given the go-ahead, to the joy of Swale council's public gallery.

NALC and Kent Association of Local Councils (KALC) were instrumental in the campaign, providing support and guidance from start to finish.

Local elections for the nine posts will be held in May next year.

Cllr Sue Baxter, chairman of NALC, said: "NALC is over the moon at the news that Sheerness will get a new local council. After a long 18-month campaign and the final vote being touch and go, the original referendum result showed the community wanted their own local council.
