The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) is holding a new event, Leaders talk: Local councils and hidden disabilities, on how local (parish and town) councils are best placed to understand the hidden disabilities in their communities. You will come away with a unique understanding of what hidden disabilities look like and how your council can safeguard residents.
The event takes place on 30 October 2020 and is part of NALC's Rebuilding Communities online event series.
The expert panel features:
- Cllr Liz Hitchins, chair of Dementia Friendly Parishes around the Yealm, will talk about how five local councils are working together to find solutions for dementia, the Four Rivers Dementia Alliance (a collaboration of 20 local councils promoting dementia-friendly communities), and the South Hams Dementia-Friendly Forum (a forum that represents dementia-friendly communities across South Hams District Council).
- Clare Pelham, chief executive of the Epilepsy Society, will talk about how epilepsy comes in many different guises, most of them invisible and how to understand them, helping make sure your community is seizure savvy, and empowering people with hidden disabilities to represent themselves in local politics.
- Ian Sheriff, academic partnership lead for dementia at the University of Plymouth, will talk about what local councils can do next to find solutions for dementia and the challenges COVID-19 presents for people living with dementia.
