In 2022, Her Majesty The Queen will become the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee. Platinum Jubilee celebrations to mark the Queen’s historic 70-year reign will occur throughout the UK and the Commonwealth as part of a year-long programme of events.
The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) encourages the efforts that local authorities are making to support their local communities in participating in the celebrations. The DLUHC wrote a letter to the National Association of Local Councils (NALC) to highlight the following opportunities for local (parish and town) councils and communities to engage with the Platinum Jubilee:
- Street parties and The Big Jubilee Lunch (2 to 5 June 2022) encourages communities to come together, bringing the Jubilee celebrations into the heart of every community.
- Councils are encouraged to participate in beacon lighting on the evening of 2 June 2022 in keeping with the long tradition of celebrating Royal Jubilees, Weddings and Coronations.
- Place such as libraries, museums, leisure centres and heritage sites are welcome to host their events and projects to mark the Platinum Jubilee.
- More than £22m of National Lottery funding is available to help communities celebrate the Platinum Jubilee.
- The official Platinum Jubilee Emblem is available for all activities associated with the Platinum Jubilee.
- The Queen’s Green Canopy is a tree-planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee, which invites people from across the UK to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”.
- The Civic Honours competition will grant the winning towns and cities ‘city status’ and ‘Lord Mayor’ or ‘Provost’ status.
- Councils are welcome to organise and facilitate large scale Platinum Jubilee events and celebrations of their choosing within their towns and cities.
- Further guidance on how to host a pageant will be available early in 2022
- The use of large screens in public places to show TV coverage of the Jubilee is encouraged.
In addition to this, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has launched a Platinum Jubilee website which includes helpful related resources, including a way for organisers to submit their events and activities to an interactive map.
