The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) has made The Financial Times (FT) big read on local government, The hyperlocal governments entrusted with reviving the English state, available to read without an FT subscription.

Written by FT’s public policy editor Peter Foster and Whitehall editor Sebastien Payne, the article was published online on 13 March and in print on 14 March 2022 under the headline, The potential of parochial politics.

The article covers the Levelling Up the United Kingdom white paper and its proposals for community empowerment, highlighting the current and potential future role of local (parish and town) councils, including interviews with Arundel Town Council in West Sussex and Shrewsbury Town Council in Shropshire.

The article also features comments from Lisa Nandy MP, shadow secretary of state for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, Will Tanner, director of Onward, Tony Travers from the London School of Economics, Mark Barrow from Shropshire Council, and Justin Griggs, NALC’s head of policy and communications.
