Women councillors network discusses White Ribbon and the Civility and Respect Pledge

The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) National Network: Women councillors met on 7 September 2023 to discuss the White Ribbon campaign, NALC’s White Ribbon accreditation and the Civility and Respect Pledge.

The network led by Cllr Kay Wesley of Congleton Town Council, one of the network’s co-chairs, explains what White Ribbon is, why White Ribbon accreditation is so important, and shares anecdotes from Congleton Town Council’s journey with White Ribbon.

Hazel Broatch, project manager of the Civility and Respect Project, attended to share statistics about the project. She shared that approximately 1,300 local (parish and town) councils have signed up for the Civility and Respect Pledge.

Cllr Judeline Nicholas of Mundesley Parish Council raised her interest in NALC creating a new network for Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) councillors. Please contact NALC at policycomms@nalc.gov.uk to register your interest.

The network also discussed the damaging effects of micro-aggressions and highlighted the need for a toolkit or training workshop on allyship and intersectionality. The network will next meet on 11 October 2023.
