Parliament approves Local Government Finance Settlement 2024/25

On 5 February 2024, the House of Commons approved the final Local Government Finance Settlement 2024/25.

The settlement confirms the exclusion of local (parish and town) councils from referendum principles for another year.

In NALC's response to the provisional settlement consultation last month, NALC had advocated for either a permanent exemption for local councils from referendum principles or exemption as part of a three-year deal.

During the debate, shadow local government minister Jim McMahon MP echoed the multiyear deal and called out the government for not putting forward a sustained multiyear finance settlement. Also, during the debate, the MP for Loughborough, Jane Hunt MP, thanked parish and town councils in her constituency for all the work they are doing.
