NALC announces two dynamic events to drive participation in local democracy
In an exciting push to boost interest and participation in local democracy, we have partnered with the Local Government Association (LGA) to bring two inspiring events designed to encourage more people, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, to stand for election as parish or town councillors.
The first event, Local Democracy in Action, on 17 October 2025, is a free event tailored for parish and town councils and county associations looking to energise their communities and widen the pool of people stepping forward to serve. Featuring expert speakers, real-world success stories, and interactive Q&A sessions, attendees will discover new approaches to inspire civic participation and boost candidate diversity. Whether you're a councillor, clerk or community leader, this event will equip you with tools, ideas, and proven methods to help you make local democracy thrive.
The second event, People in Action, on 14 November 2025, is another free event for those curious about becoming a councillor and want to make a meaningful difference where they live. The event is your chance to hear firsthand from those who've done just that. With an engaging mix of sitting councillors and sector experts, this event is open to everyone, regardless of prior experience or whether your area is parished. Learn what it means to be a councillor, how to get involved, and why now is the perfect time to step up and shape your community's future.
With the May 2026 local elections on the horizon, these events come at the ideal time. Parish and town councils are the first and most accessible level of democracy, and they need people who reflect the full diversity of their communities. If you've ever wanted to give something back or have ideas to improve your neighbourhood, this is your moment. Join the movement. Be the change.
