NALC launch new diversity report

The National Association of Local Councils' (NALC) Diversity Commission new report finds local (parish and town) councils lack gender balance, ethnicity and youth.

The report, which was launched at NALC's Annual Conference, found 39% of councillors are female, 93% of councillors are White British, and 1% of councillors come under the 18 – 25 age brackets, with the average age being 61.

The findings, which were collected over a six-month period, also found that local councils are more diverse than principal authorities, are more representative of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBTQ) community than the national average, and 7% of councillors identify as being disabled.

It is worth noting that local councils are usually found in rural areas, which are less diverse compared to urban areas. This is something that the commission needs to explore further.
