The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) has congratulated Robert Jenrick MP on his appointment as the new secretary of state for Housing, Communities and Local Government.

NALC would like to reiterate that there is a huge opportunity to build on the growing role of local (parish and town) councils and help the government and principal authorities tackle the significant challenges they face such as uniting the nation and delivering high-quality public services.

Cllr Sue Baxter, chairman of NALC, said: “Congratulations to the new secretary of state, Robert Jenrick MP. I look forward to working with him and his team to help build stronger communities through England's 10,000 local councils and take forward the proposals of the recently published Communities Framework.

“To make the most of this opportunity we need help through the upcoming Comprehensive Spending Review including fair funding through another deal on council tax referendums and access to dedicated government grants, help to provide community assets through further business rate reforms, and building capacity through a share local government sector support.”
