Northamptonshire County Association of Local Councils (NCALC) has launched a new publication that sets out the role of local (parish and town) councils in the context of unitary local government.

NCALC launched Building Communities at its annual conference in October. The publication is designed to encourage debate and act as a starting point in the dialogue with the principal authorities about how they work with local councils. NCALC aim is to help design a relationship between the two that focuses on people and places and becomes a benchmark of good practice nationally.

Cllr Sue Baxter, chairman of NALC, said: "NALC wishes NCALC the best of luck with their local government reorganisation. The fundamental principals of reorganisation to fulfil the sector's potential centre around relationships, partnerships, trust, and investment in building capacity in Northamptonshire and across the country. NALC will watch with keen interest and will share any lessons gained from the process with others across England."

Danny Moody, chief executive officer of NCALC, said: All of our engagement work has led to our thoughts being concentrated into this publication. We believe that local councils can play a vital role in building stronger and safer communities as they will be the bridge between their communities and the unitary councils."
