NALC has urged the government to help and support local councils to level up and rebuild communities

MONEY

The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) has urged the government to use the Comprehensive Spending Review and forthcoming levelling up and recovery white paper to help unlock and support local (parish and town) councils to level up and rebuild communities.

In NALC's response to the Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities, it argued that with proper support and working together with NALC, the government has an opportunity to help local councils to do more. To provide the local leadership needed to level up communities and ensure a social and economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.

NALC put forward several measures, including:

  • Levelling up local democracy by creating local councils across England
  • Fair and secure funding
  • Strengthening local leadership and accountability
  • Investing in increasing capacity and capability

The spending review and the budget are expected on 27 October 2021, and the government has indicated its intention to publish the levelling up and recovery white paper later this year.
