NALC's LGBT+ councillors national network appoints new co-champions

national network

The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) LGBT+ councillors national network appointed new co-champions at an online meeting on 24 April 2023.

It was agreed by the network that the new co-champions will be Cllrs Luke Trevaskis, chief officer at Morecambe Town Council, and Cllr Andy Snape, mayor of Flitwick Town. In the role of co-champions, Cllr Trevaskis and Cllr Snape will provide leadership to the network and its activities, as well as lead the network to focus on ways to raise the visibility of the LGBT+ community in local councils and those involved in the sector.

The champion change comes from the previous champion of the network, Cllr Mathew Hulbert, standing down as a councillor at the upcoming elections on 4 May 2023. The network thanked Cllr Hulbert for helping to set up the network and for his contributions.

As part of the Policy Committee’s review of NALC’s policy on compulsory training, the network discussed mandatory training for councillors. From the discussion, there was a general agreement that most training, including training on good governance and equality and induction training for new councillors within their first year, should be mandatory. The network also agreed that training should reflect the changing sector.

The next network meeting will take place on 13 July 2023.
