NALC urges government to retain local council green planning role

rural

The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) has urged the government to retain the central green planning role of local (parish and town) councils.

In its response to the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) consultation, Environmental Outcomes Report: a new approach to environmental assessment, NALC argued that any attempt to replace the current system of Strategic Environmental Assessment in the planning system with Environmental Outcomes Reports must not result in a weakening of environmental protection or a reduced opportunity for local councils to be able to comment on environmental issues.

This consultation seeks views on a proposed new environmental assessment system (Environmental Outcomes Reports) to replace the current EU-derived environmental assessment processes of Strategic Environmental Assessment and Environmental Impact Assessment.
