Young councillors network discusses how to make the network more effective

national network

The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) National Network: Young councillors met on 7 June 2023 to discuss how to make the network more effective for councillors.

The meeting welcomed many new faces, including councillors elected for the first time last month.

The network discussed how young people can be engaged in local politics and encouraged to run as councillors. Some ideas that were raised include engaging with local schools and universities and speaking to individuals in the community.

The network also discussed how to ensure young councillors are adequately supported throughout their time in office, especially as they transition into the new role and take up leadership positions. The idea of creating a mentoring programme or induction pack for young councillors to include sharing tips and advice was supported by the network.

The network was reminded to put forward their nominations for NALC’s Star Council Awards 2023The Star Council Awards are the only awards in England that recognise local (parish and town) councils’ contributions to their communities. The long-running awards celebrate local councils, councillors, young councillors, county associations and clerks’ positive impact on their communities. Find out more about the awards and how to submit your nomination.

The network will meet next on 31 August 2023.
