The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) network for LGBT+ councillors met on 8 April 2024 to discuss preparations for Pride 2024.

Alison McDaid, one of the leading officers behind Corby Pride 2023, and Cllr Callum Reilly, chair of the Pride Committee from Corby Town Council in Northamptonshire, joined the network to provide insights and strategies for hosting a Pride parade as a local (parish and town) council.

Alison McDaid and Cllr Reilly engaged their community through consultations, forming working groups to manage diverse perspectives effectively. The noted the benefit of collaborating with local LGBT+ groups, alongside planning contingencies for various aspects of the event like weather, road closures, and selecting appropriate entertainment. They stressed involving local businesses in marketing and explored funding options like establishing the event as a charity or community interest company (CIC) and appropriately charging vendors. Post-event social media engagement was deemed crucial for sustaining momentum.

The network agreed the importance of a NALC presence at Pride, to bolster LGBT+ visibility within local government. Plans are already underway for NALC's involvement in Pride 2024, reflecting its commitment to fostering inclusivity and community engagement. Let us know what you’re doing for Pride 2024 at  .

The next network meeting will be on 15 July 2024.
