Is the planning system working? - Update

Last week, the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Civic Societies and APPG on Local Democracy hosted a joint meeting in Parliament. The secretariat for these all party parliamentary groups are provided by NALC and Civic Voice respectively.

In light of the passing of Housing and Planning Bill recently and the emerging Neighbourhood Planning and Infrastructure Bill, the event asked the question ‘Is the planning system working?'

The meeting heard from Clive Betts MP, chair of the Communities and Local Government Committee, Baroness Parminter and Lord Porter, chair of the Local Government Association and was co chaired by Craig Mackinlay MP, chair of the APPG for Civic Societies and Scott Mann MP, vice chair of the APPG on Local Democracy.

Watch the key points from each of our speakers here.

There will also be notes from the meeting available soon so you can take a look at the key messages from each speaker.

There was also a fantastic debate between the floor and the speakers. Many key points were raised from the floor as to why the planning system may not be working as effectively as it should. These included points such as loss of planning officers in local authorities, neighbourhood plans being overruled and the lack of consultation the local community has in the planning process.
