MARTYN'S LAW — WHERE ARE WE NOW?

16 November 2023 — 12.00 – 13.30
FREE

Following the tragic death of Martyn Hett and 21 other people in the Manchester bombing of 2017 and the national campaign led by his mother, Figen Murray, and others for the government to create a law to prevent the same tragedy from happening again – Martyn’s Law is now the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Draft Bill which the government will hopefully make law before the general election.

This joint NALC and SLCC online event will highlight where Martyn’s Law is at in terms of its legislative journey as we await the government's response to the recent Home Affairs Select Committee inquiry into the draft bill.  We’ll hear of the potential measures local (parish and town) councils will need to implement if the law is enacted and take away practical tips about what councils can do to help prevent terrorism in our local areas.

Join us at this exciting awareness-raising event to get the inside track on where this key piece of draft legislation is, what it means for the local council sector and how local councils can best fight terrorism in their communities.

Speakers: Helen Ball, chief executive at Shrewsbury Town Council, Chris Borg, policy manager at the National Association of Local Councils, Lauren Renshaw, head of communications and engagement and Christian Stensrud, head of events and devolved administration engagement at the Home Office
