NALC celebrates International Women’s Day

Today, 8 March 2024, marks International Women’s Day which commemorates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women around the world. It serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for gender equality and the empowerment of women in all spheres of life. 

International Women’s Day not only honours the accomplishments of women but also calls for continued action towards creating a more inclusive and equitable society for all genders.

To celebrate International Women’s Day, NALC published a blog from Elect Her, an organisation dedicated to motivating, supporting, and equipping women to pursue their political ambitions and stand for elected office. The blog highlights how Elect Her can assist women at various stages of their political engagement through offering webinars, resources, coaching, and programmes tailored to women’s needs and experiences to help women reach their full potential in local government. Read the blog to find out more.

NALC is committed to supporting women in the local council sector through initiatives like our National Network: Women Councillors. This network connects women councillors across the country, facilitating the sharing of common interests, mutual support, and the exchange of learning and good practice. The network covers diverse topics, including the wellbeing of women councillors and strategies to combat bullying and harassment. Learn how to join the network.

In August 2023, NALC officially became a White Ribbon Accredited organisation, signifying our commitment to combatting violence against women. As a White Ribbon Accreditation organisation, NALC is implementing a three-year plan to change staff culture, systems, and our wider community. The plan aims to help NALC eliminate attitudes and behaviours that lead to violence against women. Find out more about White Ribbon.
