Following the success of our 2023 study tour, NALC is delighted to announce we'll be carrying on this good practice initiative. This year, we will be exploring Yate Town Council in Avon. Participants will be able to delve into the council's youth engagement services, gain insights into its diverse portfolio management, and understand its challenges.
This unique experience promises a closer look at what makes Yate one of England's most dynamic towns. Situated in the south-west of England, Yate is located 11 miles north-east of Bristol in the county of South Gloucestershire. With a population of 21,789 (2001 census), Yate boasts a strategic location surrounded by countryside, providing easy access to Bristol and Bath by bicycle, car, or public transport. The town's rich history dates back over 1,000 years and is mentioned in the Saxon Chronicles and the Domesday Book.

WHAT'S ON OFFER?
Participants will enjoy exclusive behind-the-scenes access to Yate Town Council, engaging with councillors and officers while visiting key sites. Here are some of the highlights:
- Embark on a guided bus tour of Yate Town Council's youth engagement services, with insightful commentary from council staff.
- Explore the renowned Armadillo Youth Cafe to understand how the council effectively manages this local youth hub.
- Immerse yourself in the allure of Kingsgate Park, featuring a lake, play area, coronation bench, and outdoor gym, learning about the council's sustainable management of this vital green space.
- Visit the Peg Hill Skate Park to witness the positive social and fitness outcomes for young individuals.
- Gain insights into the town council's promotion of broader youth health through its oversight of the Yate Outdoor Sports Complex (YOSC).
- Observe the URBIE youth vans in action and explore popular areas for youngsters.
- Cap off the day with a dinner hosted by the chair of Yate Town Council at the Poole Court offices, providing an opportunity to connect with delegates from councils across England.
- Network and exchange best practices from your councils with fellow attendees. Conclude the experience with a presentation on youth engagement by the Avon Local Councils Association.
PROGRAMME
21 May 2024
By Noon — Arrival at the entrance to Yate Train Station or those with cars drive straight to Yate Town Council offices.
12:30 — All rail delegates will be met by YTC officers at Yate Train station and taken directly to Poole Court (those with cars should drive directly to and park at Poole Court). Luggage can be stored securely at Town Council offices.
13:00 — Lunch and opening welcome to 2024 Larger Council Study Tour; lunch is served to all attendees in the council chamber. Formal greeting from the chair of Yate Town Council and to meet Hayley Townsend (Town Clerk, YTC).
13.30 — Everyone gets onto the bus (those who have not stored their luggage already at the hotel store their luggage at Poole Court or in their cars, please) outside the main entrance to town council offices.
13.30 — Study tour on the bus of community youth assets and services. To include – but not necessarily in order (flexible); · Armadillo Youth Café. · Kingsgate Park for a walk – lake, play area, coronation bench and outdoor gym. · Peg Hill Skate Park. · Kickabout areas. · URBIE. · Yate Outdoor Sports Complex (YOSC).
16:30 — Bus tour ends, and delegates return to YTC offices on the minibus.
17:00 — Refreshment and comfort break.
17:45 — All delegates are to then arrive back at town council offices.
18:00 — Everyone adjourns to the relevant room for networking.
18:15 — Everyone retires to a private room at the Town Council offices for an evening buffet meal.
18:25 — Formal welcome to evening meal from the chair of Yate Town Council and Cllr Mike Drew, NALC LCC member.
18:30 — Barnaby Harding, ALCA county officer, on background information on community youth provision in Avon and the role local councils can play in support.
21:05 — Formal close of evening meal from the chair of Yate Town Council.
21.05 — Meal ends. Delegates with cars drive back to the hotel. Delegates without cars are taken back to the hotel by YTC officers.
22 May 2024
By 09:00 — Breakfast and check-out of the hotel.
09:00 — Delegates with cars drive to Poole Court town council offices (and use the car park at Poole Court, Yate Town Council offices). YTC drives delegates without cars to Poole Court.
09:05—Presentations from Yate Council (council chamber) (clerk, chair, and youth/community services officer tbc). During this session, delegates will be able to ask all speakers questions.
Noon — Presentations end.
12:05 — Everyone convenes in town council offices (room to be confirmed) for a sandwich lunch.
12:30 — Chair of Yate Town Council and Cllr Mike Drew, NALC LCC member, close the event; the study visit ends. Delegates with cars drive home, and YTC officers drive delegates without cars to Yate train station.
